How to Edit a Sequence
title: How to Edit a Sequence
description: Update sequence settings, flowchart, email senders, tracking, and scheduling for running or paused sequences.
Overview
You can edit a sequence at any time to change its settings, flowchart, email senders, tracking options, or scheduling. This article explains what can be edited and how those changes affect leads that are already enrolled.
Open a Sequence for Editing
- Go to Outreach → Sequences.
- Find the sequence you want to edit.
- Click the three-dot menu on the right side of the sequence row.
- Select Edit.
Note: Completed sequences cannot be edited. If a sequence is completed, clone it or create a new sequence instead.
What You Can Edit
Sequence Name
Click the pencil icon next to the sequence name at the top of the editor and type a new name.
Flowchart (Sequence Steps)
Add, remove, or rearrange blocks on the canvas:
- Source blocks — change which leads enter the sequence.
- Cold Email blocks — change templates, subject lines, send-as options, or A/B tests.
- Task blocks — change task type or due date.
- Wait blocks — change delay duration.
- If/Else blocks — change branching conditions.
- Action blocks — move, archive, unsubscribe, or end sequences for leads.

Save Options

- Save as Paused — save changes but keep the sequence paused.
Impact of Editing a Running or Paused Sequence
Editing a Running Sequence
When you save changes to a sequence that has already been launched:
- No duplicate emails. Emails that have already been sent to a lead are not resent.
- New blocks do not apply retroactively. If you add a new email block, leads who have already passed that step will not receive it.
- Pending tasks are rescheduled. All pending emails and tasks are deleted and recalculated based on the current flowchart and settings.
Tip: Before saving, the editor shows a warning reminding you that pending emails and tasks will be rescheduled.
Editing a Paused Sequence
You can edit any part of a paused sequence. When you launch it again:
- Pending tasks are rebuilt from the current flowchart and settings.
- Leads that have not completed the sequence continue from the next pending step.
- Leads that already completed the sequence are not affected.
Paused Due to Bounces
If a sequence shows Paused due to bounces, it was automatically paused because the bounce rate exceeded your bounce threshold. Before restarting:
- Check your Email Senders health status.
- Fix any sender health issues, such as disconnected accounts or high bounce rates.
- Review your lead list quality and remove invalid addresses.
- Edit the sequence if needed, then click Launch Sequence.
Note: Simply editing settings does not restart the sequence. You must launch it again.
Outbox Mode Impact
If you enable Review emails in Outbox before sending while editing:
- Existing pending emails are not automatically moved to the Outbox.
- After saving, go to Outbox to review and approve future emails.
- When Outbox is enabled, emails are created with
approved: falseand will not send until you approve them.
Auto-Pause and Sender Changes
- If you remove all email senders from a sequence and save, the sequence is automatically paused.
- If a sender becomes disabled or unhealthy, the sequence status may show Needs Attention until you fix or replace the sender.
Evergreen Sequences
- The Evergreen Sequence setting can only be changed before the sequence is first scheduled.
- After a sequence has launched, the Evergreen checkbox is disabled.
How Email Sending Works
When you launch or reschedule a sequence, SalesBlink builds a queue of tasks and sends emails through the following pipeline:
1. Schedule Tasks
When a sequence is launched or edited, SalesBlink first rebuilds the sending plan. It:
- Clears all pending tasks for the sequence.
- Pulls contacts from source lists, segments, or CRM integrations.
- Walks through the flowchart and prepares each outreach step.
2. Build Email Tasks
For each contact at each email step, SalesBlink creates a send task. During this step it:
- Selects an email sender using round-robin rotation.
- Applies provider matching if enabled, so a lead with a Gmail address is more likely to receive emails from a Gmail sender.
- Respects each sender's daily email sending limit.
- Calculates the send time using the sequence timezone, sending hours, and random delays.
- Skips contacts who are unsubscribed, archived, or who do not match the verified-email filter.
3. Queue Emails
Each email task is placed in the sending queue with a scheduled send time. The task waits in the queue until its scheduled time arrives.
4. Send Emails
At the scheduled time, the sending service picks up the task and performs final checks before sending:
- Skips the task if it is already completed.
- Skips the task if the same lead already received an email for this sequence step.
- Validates the contact email, sequence state, and sender health.
- Sends the email through the connected sender.
- Marks the task as complete and removes it from the queue.
Duplicate Prevention
SalesBlink prevents duplicate sends at two levels:
- When scheduling: it checks for completed tasks and only schedules leads who have not yet received the email for that step.
- When sending: it checks again right before the email goes out.
Note: If you add a new email block to a running sequence, leads who have already passed that step will not receive the new email. Only leads who reach that step after the edit can receive it.
Outbox Flow
If Review emails in Outbox before sending is enabled:
- Emails are held in the Outbox and marked as not approved.
- Emails are not queued for sending until you approve them in the Outbox.
- After approval, the email follows the normal queue and send flow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I edit a sequence while it is running?
Yes. You can edit the flowchart and settings. Saving changes will reschedule all pending emails and tasks, but already sent emails are not resent.
Will editing a sequence resend emails to leads who already received them?
No. SalesBlink tracks completed tasks and never sends the same email from the same step to the same lead twice.
What happens to leads already in the sequence when I edit it?
Leads that are in progress continue from the next pending step based on the updated flowchart. Leads that have completed the sequence are not affected. New leads added to the source list are enrolled according to the current settings.
What happens if I pause a sequence while editing?
All pending incomplete tasks are deleted from the sending queue. When you restart the sequence, tasks are recalculated and rescheduled.
Why does my sequence show Paused due to bounces?
The bounce rate exceeded the configured bounce threshold. The sequence is paused automatically to protect sender reputation. Fix sender health and list quality issues, then restart the sequence.
Can I change the Evergreen setting after launch?
No. Evergreen can only be enabled or disabled before the sequence is first scheduled.
What happens if I remove all email senders?
The sequence is automatically paused because it has no sender to send emails from. Add at least one sender and launch again.
Do I need to approve Outbox emails again after editing settings?
Enabling Outbox while editing does not retroactively require approval for emails that were already scheduled. Only new emails created after Outbox is enabled are held for approval.
Will emails be sent again to the same leads if I reschedule the sequence?
No. SalesBlink checks completed tasks when scheduling and again right before sending. Leads who already received an email from a specific step will not receive it again. Only pending or incomplete tasks are rescheduled.
